We offer a contended or shared business broadband service where you will share a 10 Gbps (or higher) port. However, for most businesses, our 100% full fibre broadband will offer a faster, more affordable and far more flexible solution than expensive, slower dedicated lines.

 

Instead, you will have a dedicated fibre to the premises (FTTP) broadband connection that we’ve built and maintain. We also monitor the utilisation of all ports to ensure that contention is never an issue for our business customers.

 

People often assume that there is a strict distinction between contended and uncontended broadband (where the latter is always better). However, there are a few things to bear in mind:

  1. All internet connections share capacity at some point, and even if you have an uncontended port at the exchange, you will still be sharing capacity beyond that.
  2. The total size of the capacity shared is also very important.

For instance, if most of your normal office use consists of many users carrying out ‘high-bandwidth’ office tasks (such as Teams meetings, streaming, cloud computing etc.) with some frequent but not consistent ‘very high-bandwidth’ tasks (such as very large file transfers), then sharing 10 Gbps broadband capacity is likely to be much better for you than a dedicated 1 Gbps leased line.

 

This is because you’ll always have the bandwidth available that you need for regular use, and then during those very high-bandwidth peaks, you’ll have access to much more capacity than a 1 Gbps dedicated line could offer.
